There are also government grants for cleaning beaches.

Now municipalities that intend to spruce up their coastal areas can apply for money from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and receive help with up to 90 percent of the costs.

A total of 17 million Swedish kronor has been allocated for the grant this year. Municipalities can apply for the support, individually or jointly, until April 10.

Priority should be given to areas where large amounts of litter are washed ashore. If several projects are considered to lead to similar results in terms of the amount of litter collected, the one that contributes the most to employment should be given priority.

In some parts of Sweden, garbage along the coasts causes major problems in the form of high cleaning costs and negative impacts on, for example, wildlife and outdoor life as well as tourism, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency writes in a press release.
