Two low-cost airlines in the United States become one when Frontier Airlines buys competitor Spirit Airlines in a deal for $2.9 billion, equivalent to 26.6 billion Swedish kronor.

The merger creates the country's fifth largest airline and in pre-trade on the New York Stock Exchange, Frontier is down almost three percent while Spirit Airlines is up around twelve percent.
