New blow for Bromma Airport – a thousand jobs lost at Brussels Airlines

Almost 20 years ago, the Belgian airline Sabena went bankrupt. Now its successor, Brussels Airlines, is also at risk of the same fate and is therefore forced to lay off one in four employees – around 1,000 people.

The airline is one of the few that serves Bromma Airport.

”"The extremely negative consequences of the coronavirus crisis on the company's finances and the continued low demand for air travel are forcing Brussels Airlines to take significant and unavoidable measures to guarantee the company's survival," the Lufthansa-owned company said in a statement.

30 percent of the fleet – 16 planes – will also be removed, according to the newspaper Le Soir.

Negotiations are currently underway regarding a support package from the Belgian state of 290 million euros.

”"A difficult message for employees and their families in a situation of great uncertainty," Belgian Prime Minister Sophie Wilmès said on Twitter.

According to Bromma Airport Website Brussels Airlines is one of four airlines serving the airport. The others are BRA, British Airways and Finnair.

On April 6, BRA filed for corporate restructuring, and then paused its flights until further notice.
