Europe has set a new heat record. 48.8 degrees is now the highest temperature ever measured on the continent. 

The high temperature was measured in the southeastern part of Sicily in 2021. 

Because it was not Italy's official weather service that measured the temperature, it has taken until now for the UN weather agency WMO to confirm.
