With an average temperature of 14.14 degrees, March 2024 became the warmest March ever measured on Earth and the tenth record month in a row, according to the EU's climate service Copernicus.
As March drew to a close, it felt more like summer than early spring in places like the Baltics, Poland, Croatia and Albania. Japan recorded temperatures that usually only occur in July, and it was also unusually warm in countries like Guatemala and Costa Rica.
March this year was 0.73 degrees warmer than the average for the month during 1991–2000 and 0.10 degrees warmer than March 2016, which held the previous record.
”Stopping further warming requires rapid reductions in greenhouse gas emissions,” said Samantha Burgess, deputy director of Copernicus, in a press release.
