The heat is hitting the American South hard. In the city of Phoenix in the state of Arizona, USA, a new maximum temperature of 47.8 was measured on Tuesday.
Temperatures had reached at least 43 degrees Celsius (111 degrees Fahrenheit) for 19 consecutive days on Tuesday, also a new record. In 1974, a similar heat wave lasted for 18 days, according to the federal weather agency.
None of the 25 largest cities in the United States have experienced such sustained heat for so many days before, writes AP.
