Swedish passports and national identity cards will have a new look from 1 January 2022.
Security is at the forefront of the new passports, the police write on their website, and the passports will include, among other things, images of the holder that appear under ultraviolet light.
The new actions also contain a recurring theme of nature and greenery, such as deciduous and coniferous trees, which are meant to characterise Sweden.
The police believe that the new passports will be better at preventing and reducing the abuse of genuine documents and identities. Therefore, the placement of the holder's signature has also been changed. It has now been moved to the inside of the front cover of the passport.
Another security feature is also visible: a photo of the holder covered by a ”variable security mechanism” that protects against tampering.
In addition to the visual changes, the digital component has also been updated with a new chip featuring enhanced cryptographic protection with new key lengths, the police write on their website.
