More and more Swedish campers are spending more time in their camping vehicles each summer, according to a survey conducted by the Swedish Motorhome and Caravan Industry Association (HRF).
– The explanation is that more and more people are using their caravans and motorhomes throughout much of the year. Not just in the summer, says HRF chairman Per Nilsson.
Interest in mobile living in Sweden is not only well-established. It is also increasing. Figures from SCR Svensk Camping show that 2022 was a new record year with an increase of 11 percent compared to the previous year.
The growing camping trend is also reflected in the Swedish Caravan and Motorhome Industry Association's HRF survey conducted during the autumn.
– The HRF survey clearly shows that caravan and motorhome owners use their vehicles more today than five years ago. And when asked about the future, more than one in four say they will camp more. Only 2.6 percent believe there will be less camping in the future, explains Per Nilsson.
Sweden is the country in Europe with the most camping vehicles per capita, followed by the Netherlands, Denmark, Finland and Germany. SCR Svensk Camping's statistics clearly show that camping interest continues to increase. The number of guest nights at Swedish campsites was a breathtaking 17.1 million in 2022, which is an increase of 11 percent compared to the previous year.
– There are of course several explanations for the strong growth. If you look at the development of camping vehicles, they today offer a standard that makes ”life on wheels” easy and luxurious. Well-equipped kitchens, underfloor heating, comfortable beds and bathrooms with all amenities are basically standard, says Per Nilsson.
The HRF survey asked, among other things, how much campers live in their vehicles today compared to five years ago. Almost half (44.7 percent) answered ”somewhat more” or ”considerably more.” Today, people live an average of 30.2 nights in their camping vehicle per year.
When asked ”how do you think you will camp in the future?” the majority (70.2 percent) answered that the extent will be the same as today, but more than one in four (27.2 percent) stated that they will camp more. Only 2.6 percent will camp less than today. Per Nilsson is not surprised by the result.
– Just as the figures show, we in the industry have had the perception that every caravan and motorhome is being used more than before. For us as an industry, this is obviously interesting. It shows that we operate in an industry with continued growth.
