As of April 1, new rules apply for passports and national ID cards.
Here are the most important news to remember.
At the end of March, the police issued information about new rules for those who want to apply for a passport or national ID card.
As usual, you must book an appointment at a passport office to make your application. You will be photographed and fingerprinted and pay a fee. A passport costs 350 kronor and a national ID card 400 kronor. You must also bring your old passport or national ID card if it is still valid.
The new rules mean the following:
- To identify yourself
If you are going to identify yourself with a service card, it must be SIS-marked. Other service cards are no longer valid as identification when applying for a Swedish passport or national ID card. - Citizenship
You are always required to prove your Swedish citizenship. If necessary, the Police Authority will conduct an investigation to ensure that you are a Swedish citizen. - Passport or national ID card for children under 18 years of age
Guardian consent is always required for applications for a passport or national ID card for children under 18 years of age and must be submitted on a special form. The guardians must sign and the signature must be authenticated, meaning it must be witnessed and thus certified. Guardians may not authenticate each other's signatures. - Supplementary documents
If you need to supplement your application with documents to prove your identity or citizenship, they must be presented in original or certified copy of the original. - Extra pass
If you need an extra passport, you must justify your need with a written statement and state how long you need the extra passport for. You must also state whether you need a previously issued extra passport during a transitional period.
When you pick up your passport or national ID card
- Receipt
When you pick up your passport or national ID card, you must bring the receipt you received when you applied. - Countersignature
When you pick up your passport or national ID card, you must sign your name (countersign) in the same way as when applying.
