New snowstorm is coming – up to 20 centimeters

With summertime comes a new snowshoe.

SMHI warns of strong winds and heavy snowfall on Monday and Tuesday.

– It is mainly the combination of strong winds and snowfall that can cause problems, says meteorologist Mattias Lind.

By Sunday afternoon, the ground had already started to turn white in places in southern Sweden. During the night to Monday, it snowed in Stockholm as the storm moved in from the southeast.

It's just the beginning.

Swedish National Institute of Health has issued a yellow warning in northeastern Södermanland County, Stockholm County, Uppsala County and southeastern Gävleborg County.

It comes into effect at 12 noon on Monday and is valid until 2 pm on Tuesday.

According to SMHI, 5-15 centimeters of snow may fall during that time, locally around 20 centimeters. This is combined with a fresh northerly wind of 7-12 meters per second.

– The intensity of the snowfall is expected to vary slightly, but in some places the snow may remain until Tuesday afternoon, especially around Hinterland, eastern Svealand and the Stockholm area, says Mattias Lind, officer on duty at SMHI.

”Could be a problem”

The most snow is expected to fall in the areas around Uppland, but SMHI is also warning of uncertainty in the forecast and large local variations.

– It is mainly the combination of strong winds and snowfall that can cause problems, says Mattias Lind.

Traffic may be slower due to slippery conditions, slush, sleet and poor visibility. Snowdrifts and drifts make it more difficult to keep roads clear and can create limited accessibility, especially in open landscapes that have not had time to be cleared of snow or are affected by traffic accidents.

Could be a problem with public transport

Public transport can also experience problems with delays and cancellations.

According to Mattias Lind, the temperature is expected to be around one or a few degrees below zero during the day in the coming days. And since the nights are even colder, the snow is also expected to remain for a few days.
