New tourism accounts at regional and municipal levels show that the economic significance of tourism varies markedly across the country. While metropolitan counties account for a large part of total tourism consumption, consumption per capita is often higher in smaller counties.

Jämtland and Gotland are among the counties with high per capita tourism consumption, where tourism constitutes a noticeable feature of the local economy and labour market.
Even tourism growth varies, with factors such as trade and transport playing a crucial role at county and municipal levels.

A few municipalities have a high proportion of tourism consumption, often linked to specific reasons for travel such as cross-border shopping, airports or established tourist destinations.
– We can clearly see that tourism is of greatest importance to smaller and more visitor-intensive counties, where it contributes to both jobs and local development. The municipalities where tourism contributes most economically often have similar characteristics, for example, winter or summer tourism and proximity to Norway or Finland with border trade, says Imber Råbock, analyst at Tillväxtverket.
The new statistics provide a comprehensive picture of tourism's local economic effects across the entire country and can be used as a basis for regional development and future investments.
