The holiday is seen by many as a time for rest and recovery – and for a large proportion also as an opportunity to reduce their digital presence. A new survey from travel agency Ticket shows that many Swedes may consider completely or partially disconnecting their mobile phones during their holiday abroad, especially from social media.
Many Swedes feel the need to reduce their digital presence during their vacation. A new survey conducted by Sifo on behalf of the travel agency Ticket shows that a large proportion would consider completely or partially giving up their mobile phone during a vacation abroad.
According to the survey, 57 percent of Swedes say they would consider completely or partially reducing their mobile phone use on vacation. Of these, 36 percent say they would consider partially giving up their mobile phones and opting out of social media, while 11 percent would consider a completely mobile-free vacation. A further 10 percent say they would consider just giving up emails.
– The survey shows that many see the holidays as an important time for recovery. For the most part, it is about creating distance from the digital flow, rather than completely shutting it off, says Tiyoneh Jah, PR & Communications Manager at travel agency Ticket.
Social media easier to opt out of
The results show that social media is what most people are prepared to cut back on, while the step to going completely without a mobile phone is perceived as a bigger one. This suggests that mobile phones continue to fulfill a practical function during the holiday, while many want to change how they are used.
“Many people want to be able to use their mobile phones when needed, but without feeling the need to be constantly connected. It's more about finding a balance than disconnecting completely,” continues Tiyoneh Jah.
Vacation as a time for recovery
The survey shows that for many, vacation serves as a conscious break from the pace of everyday life. By cutting back on email and social media, clearer boundaries are created between work and time off – and thus better conditions for recovery, presence and mental rest.
“For many, recovery is a central part of the holiday. Consciously reducing your digital presence can actually help you feel more relaxed,” she says.
About the survey:
The survey is based on a nationally representative sample of the Swedish population aged 18–79 and was conducted by Kantar Sifo on behalf of Ticket.
