Jet fuel has become too expensive, which is why Nigerian airlines are stopping flying, the industry association Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has announced.

”"There is no airline in the world that can withstand the shock of such an astronomical price increase in such a short period of time," AON said in a statement.

Fuel prices have increased worldwide following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. According to AON, the price of jet fuel per liter has increased from 190 to 700 naira. In Swedish kronor, this corresponds to an increase from 4.5 to 16.7 kronor per liter.

Therefore, "all activities throughout the country" are being canceled starting Monday until further notice.

Raising ticket prices instead would have resulted in prices that are far too high, says AON.

Nigeria is the largest country in Africa in terms of population.
