Central Park in Manhattan, New York, has officially become car-free.
On Tuesday evening, city representatives, along with park and bike activists, gathered in a bike ride behind the last car, which drove through the park at 7 p.m. local time.
"For over a hundred years, we have turned one of the world's most iconic parks into a highway - and starting tonight, we are taking it back forever," said Mayor Bill de Blasio.
Until now, roads in the southern parts of the park in the American multi-million dollar city have been open to cars during rush hour.
Central Park has close to 250,000 visitors daily. The park turns 160 next year.
It will still be possible to drive through the park in certain places.
