It is now clear that Sweden will have smoking bans in several public places.

The proposal was put forward by the Government and on Thursday, Parliament's Social Affairs Committee backed the proposal.

The ban will apply to outdoor seating areas and will also include e-cigarettes.

At the beginning of 2018, the government proposed a ban on smoking in several public places.

On Thursday, the Riksdag's Committee on Social Affairs backed the proposal, which will now come into effect.

The proposal concerns bans in several new outdoor locations. These include train platforms, bus stops, playgrounds and sports grounds, as well as outdoor seating areas.
The goal is to reduce the Swedish population's use of tobacco to achieve the target of a smoke-free Sweden in 2025.

In 2005, Sweden introduced a ban prohibiting smoking indoors, including in restaurants.
The government's proposal now becomes another step in extending the smoking ban in Sweden.
– There is very broad support among the Swedish population for taking further steps, not least to protect children and young people, said Minister for Social Affairs Annika Strandhäll to Aftonbladet when the government presented the proposal.

Other parts of the proposal are that everyone selling tobacco must have a licence. However, the committee is stopping the proposal to ban so-called self-service of snus. Snus users will continue to be able to pick and choose their snus box themselves.
The new smoking ban rules come into effect on 1 July 2019.
