The airline Norwegian is launching a new climate and environmental strategy, according to which the company will, among other things, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 45 percent per passenger kilometer by 2030.
”"We will need up to 500 million liters of sustainable fuel by 2030 if we are to meet the goal," says CEO Jacob Schram.
At a press conference at the company's headquarters in Fornebu on Thursday morning, Jacob Schram and Sustainability Manager Anders Fagernæs presented new climate and environmental targets for the company. The emission reduction is set in line with meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement and in practice means, among other things, that the company's need for sustainable fuel will increase significantly.
The company will need at least 500 million liters of sustainable fuel per year by 2030. This can be compared to the fact that today a total of approximately 400,000 tons of such fuel are produced in Norway each year, which should be enough for all modes of transport, says Anders Fagernæs. The airline is thus committing to using between 16 and 28 percent sustainable fuel before this decade is over.
”The production of biofuel and sustainable fuel will need to increase significantly for us to reach the goal,” he says.
Jacob Schram was clear that the announcement should be seen as a call to fuel producers and suppliers not to skimp on gunpowder when it comes to increasing production.
”"The problem today is that it is too expensive and that we have a shortage of such fuel. On the other hand, Norway has great advantages in both natural resources and expertise in the area," he says.
Both biofuel and synthetic sustainable fuels, such as hydrogen, will be needed to meet supply.
”"We will become a major purchaser of sustainable fuel from all sources, and we know that we will have an important role and market power when we buy so much. The Prime Minister recently said that she wants a large-scale investment in hydrogen, and we are happy to be part of developing the market," says Jacob Schram.
The new environmental and climate strategy sets a goal that all plastic that cannot be recycled will be removed from operations by 2023.
Climate risks and environmental goals should also be integrated into all corporate decisions.
