SJ is now releasing all its train tickets for late summer and autumn travel. The earlier you book, the better price you get. But there are more tips for those who want to make a purchase.
SJ releases tickets about four to five times a year. And anyone who wants to find affordable tickets has reason to be quick to book. The earlier you buy a ticket, the better price you can get, since it is supply and demand that determines the price.
The train company is now opening up bookings for the period 19 August to 14 December 2019. This applies to both day and night trains. The best prices are 195 SEK for second class and 295 SEK for first class on SJ Snabbtåg.
– Anyone who wants to find cheap tickets should go against the grain and travel at times when not everyone else wants to travel. There are generally many people who travel on Friday and Sunday, but fewer who travel early Friday morning or early on a Sunday morning. Saturday morning to Monday morning can also be an alternative for those who are going to be away for a weekend. Tuesday midday is another time when fewer people travel and you can find good prices, says Karin Starkman Ahlstedt, communications strategist at SJ.
Cheaper train travel in the summer
When booking flights, ticket prices can sometimes drop close to the departure date and you can find last-minute deals. This does not happen with SJ, as you get the cheapest prices at the beginning.
During the summer period, you can generally find cheaper trips because fewer business travelers travel then. According to a new report from KTH's Railway Group, the average price of a train trip is far below what a flight costs when compared to the train on four major city routes. The report also shows that travel time by train is equivalent to or better than by flight on certain routes.
