Japan continues to keep its borders largely closed, at least until more is known about the extent of the danger posed by the omicron variant of the coronavirus.

The strict border rules mean that almost no foreigners are allowed into the country. So far, around 80 cases of omicron infection have been detected, but only at airports among people who have arrived. However, the authorities assess that community spread will occur at any time.

From now on, all people who come into contact with omicron-infected people will have to quarantine for two weeks in government custody, instead of in their own homes, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced.

Kishida did not say how long the border regulations will be in effect.
