The rental of electric scooters in the Norwegian capital Oslo will be suspended between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., according to a decision by the city council at an extraordinary meeting.

The decision was made at the urging of doctors at Oslo University Hospital, who have calculated that between 300 and 400 injuries can be avoided during the summer with the nightly lockdown.

Several rental companies have already chosen to turn off bicycles at night and one has introduced speed limits during the dark hours.

Oslo is the European city with the highest number of electric scooters per inhabitant. In the last three months alone, the number has increased by 24 percent to just over 25,700, according to municipal statistics.
