Paris police chief Michel Delpuech will be fired after another weekend of riots in the capital, Prime Minister Édouard Philippe announced in a televised speech.
More than 100 businesses were vandalized in connection with the Yellow Vests protest movement demonstration on Saturday, including luxury stores and restaurants on the Champs-Élysées.
Around 5,000 police were deployed during Saturday's protests, significantly more than the hundreds of rioters who rampaged for several hours on the famous street in the face of often passive police.
Édouard Philippe said French authorities will ban demonstrations on the Champs-Élysées and in other parts of the country if hooligans take part in them. Fines will also be raised from 38 to 135 euros (equivalent to just over 1,400 kronor) for those participating in demonstrations without a permit.
The Prime Minister also criticized "inappropriate" instructions to security forces regarding the use of rubber-coated bullets against protesters.
