Paris is canceling its traditional New Year's Eve celebration on the grand Champs-Élysées to curb the spread of the omicron variant of the coronavirus.
”"There will be no fireworks and unfortunately no DJ gigs either," the mayor's office says.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has warned that omicron could become the dominant variant of the virus as early as mid-January, and several European countries are now preparing new restrictions.
In Ireland, bars and restaurants are forced to close at eight o'clock until January 30. Denmark will close cinemas, theatres and concert halls and limit restaurant opening hours.
