Greece will close bars, restaurants, gyms, cinemas and museums in the country's major cities starting November 3, announced Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The lockdown will last for a month and will include the capital Athens, the country's second largest city Thessaloniki and the cities of Larissa and Ioannina. The nighttime curfew will also be extended.
Hotels, hair salons and food delivery businesses will be allowed, as will retail. Schools will also be able to remain open, while teaching at universities will primarily take place remotely.
”"A total lockdown would be harmful to the economy and society," says Mitsotakis, adding that he wished he had avoided announcing the lockdown.
”But circumstances require it.”
The number of corona cases in Greece has been fewer than in many parts of Europe, but the spread has gradually increased since the beginning of October.
Since February, more than 37,000 confirmed cases have been registered, including almost 1,700 new cases on Friday. A total of 620 people in Greece have died from COVID-19.
