An incoming passenger plane from Fort Lauderdale, USA, was hit by gunfire as it was about to land in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, writes Miami Herald.

The Spirit Airlines plane was diverted to the Dominican Republic, where it landed safely.

A flight attendant was hit by a bullet, but is not said to be seriously injured.

Last month, a UN helicopter was hit by gunfire in Port-au-Prince, blamed on armed gangs.
