At least 13 people have died in a fire on a passenger plane in the Russian capital Moscow, hospital sources told the state news agency Tass.

The plane was forced to make an emergency landing at the city's Sheremetyevo International Airport after a fire broke out on board.

Video clips and images on social media show the fire spreading rapidly after landing. The fire is said to have started in the plane's tail section, which was already on fire as the plane descended for landing.

The plane took off from Sheremetyevo with destination Murmansk, but requested an emergency landing shortly after takeoff, Russian state media reported, according to the Reuters news agency.

The number of injured varies between five and more than ten people, according to Reuters. The plane had 78 passengers. An unknown number of people were able to get off the plane. Video footage from the accident shows passengers running from the scene.

The plane, which belongs to the airline Aeroflot, is a Sukhoi Superjet, a regional aircraft with a capacity for 75 to 95 passengers.
