Four people have died when two planes crashed in Mangalore, north of Melbourne, Australia, reports ABC News.

The emergency services were alerted to the accident just before lunch local time.

Police believe the two smaller aircraft, both with two people on board, collided in mid-air.

Aerial photos from the crash site show the wreckage of one plane in a clearing, while the other is in a nearby forest area.

The accident occurred near the Mangalore airfield where pilots are also trained.

"You practice maneuvers around here all the time, but I thought the plane looked like it was flying a little lower than normal," Joanne Dwyer, who witnessed the accident, told The Age newspaper.
