During the summer, nearly 100,000 digital copies of identity documents, which guests have handed over in connection with check-in and check-out or booking, have been stolen from about ten hotels in Italy.
André Catry, an IT security expert at the Swedish Armed Forces, among others, has urged affected Swedes who have been on holiday in Italy to destroy their ID documents.
Now the Swedish police are making the same call.
In a press release, the police write that the copies, according to the Italian authority Agenzia per L'italia, have been put up for sale on the darknet.
”"The police therefore see an increased risk if the traveler has given up their passport or national ID card and the hotel has taken a copy of it. In such cases, there may be reason to apply for a new passport or national identity card, and cancel the old one"”, it says.
The police also advise victims to block their social security numbers with UC, so that no one can apply for credit or loans in their name, and to block unauthorized address changes with the Swedish Tax Agency.
