A truck bed containing scrap metal began emitting smoke aboard the Silja Serenade during the night leading into Tuesday, reports Åland radio.

The ferry from Finland was on its way from Helsinki to Stockholm when the smoke was detected.

Serenade docked in Mariehamn at around 3 o'clock and rescue personnel have arrived from both Turku and Helsinki, it is reported.

Around 4 AM, Silja Serenade was able to leave Mariehamn.

– It is now heading into the Stockholm archipelago, says Lina Burström, spokesperson for the Swedish Maritime Administration.
