For the first time, passengers flew long-distance in a plane powered by cooking oil. The hope is that the new fuel method will reduce the climate impact of aviation.
The plane flew from Paris to Montreal powered by a mixture of recycled cooking oil and traditional fuel. But for the flight crew, the fuel mix has no impact.
“For our procedures, this changes absolutely nothing, no mechanical or technical contraindications. We can use these new fuels 100 percent,” says Pascal Burrignon from Air France.
But how quickly the fuel can change the aviation industry's emissions is unclear. According to the International Civil Aviation Organization, international flights will not reduce their emissions in the short term.
