Several demonstrations and protests were organized in Italy on Friday in connection with new strict restrictions for workplaces came into force.

To enter their workplaces, Italians must now have the so-called ”green passport,” which was previously required for restaurant visits and train travel, among other things. The health passport must certify that employees have either been vaccinated, presented a negative corona test, or had an infection in the past six months.

Protests were directed at several major ports in the country. In Trieste, over 6,500 demonstrators gathered at the port, which despite a declared blockade was able to be kept operational according to regional authorities. In Genoa, around 300 people blocked an entrance to the port.

In Rome, there was a heavy police presence ahead of the demonstrations, but violence was absent. Schools closed early and embassies issued warnings of possible violence similar to last weekend, when far-right activists clashed with police.
