Australian airline Qantas will require all passengers on the company's international flights to have been vaccinated against Covid-19.
”"I think it's a necessity for international visitors to come here and for people to leave the country," CEO Alan Joyce told Channel Nine.
Joyce believes that more airlines will introduce similar requirements but also admits that it may depend on logistics and technology.
”"What we are looking at is whether we can introduce a vaccination passport, an electronic passport that shows which vaccine you have taken," he says.
Australia has essentially closed its borders to all travelers since March. Only citizens and permanent residents are allowed in, and there are limits on how many of them are allowed in each week.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has opened the door to introducing travel bubbles with a number of countries that have restricted the coronavirus, mainly New Zealand and some Asian countries. Any major opening will not happen until a vaccine is widely available at the earliest.
Australia has fared relatively well during the coronavirus pandemic, with just over 27,800 infected people and 907 deaths.
