Travelers from US states with high infection rates must self-isolate for two weeks starting Thursday when they arrive in New York and the neighboring states of New Jersey and Connecticut, the governors of the three states announced during a press conference in New York.
New York became known early on as the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in the US and is the hardest-hit state so far. The governors justify the quarantine decision by saying they do not want to see a second wave of the virus in the area.
”"It's a smart thing to do. We've taken our residents through purgatory and back. The last thing we need now is to put our people through another round," said Phil Murphy, governor of New Jersey, via video link during the press conference.
The states to which the decision applies are currently Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Washington and Utah, says New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Tuesday saw the second-highest number of new cases reported in the United States since the virus began spreading in the country. Several states, such as Arizona, Mississippi, Nevada and Texas, have had record high numbers at the beginning of the week, while the number of infections each day in New York has dropped.
