Hassle with bank cards this fall

Remove

On September 14, card purchases may start to run into problems both in stores and online. The reason is tightened security regulations.

Ulla Fleming is shopping for food in Stockholm and is having trouble getting her card to process the purchase. This fall, there may be more of that item. In stores, purchases without a PIN may be denied.

If you don't have the PIN code today, you have to show your ID and sign.

– Then we check the ID and check with the card that it is correct. About 10-15 people per day need to sign, says Sarinee Tångstedt, who works at the checkout at the grocery store.

But signing a card purchase will become more difficult. From September 14, there is a risk that such purchases will not go through.

– Yes, then they'll probably be a little upset. Then we'd probably recommend they go to their bank.

But even online, a lot of card purchases are at risk of failing due to the new rules.

– In the worst case, there could be relatively many transactions that are denied, says Lars Rutberg, payments manager at the Swedish Bankers' Association.

The rules come into effect on September 14th across Europe and require better security when making card purchases.

– We want to improve payments and reduce fraud. That is the aim, says Lars Rutberg.

Bank-ID or a similar security solution will be required when shopping online – just using your card details is no longer enough.

In Sweden, e-retailers are well prepared, but in the rest of Europe things are worse.

For consumers, it is therefore important to obtain a bank ID and remember their PIN this fall.

Ulla Fleming at the grocery store got her purchase through and usually keeps track of the PIN code.

– When you buy for less than 200 kronor, you can get screwed. Now it went well, she says.
