Nearly 4,500 weapons were seized in security checks at US airports last year.
This is an increase of five percent compared to the previous year and the highest figure in 18 years, as far as the US security agency TSA's statistics go.
The handguns were found both in hand luggage and carried by passengers. 87 percent were loaded with ammunition.
The most weapons were seized at the airports in Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth and Denver.
