Sweden recorded a record number of commercial guest nights in June 2026. According to statistics from the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth, 7.58 million guest nights were registered, making the month the strongest June to date and representing an increase of just over three percent compared to June 2025.
The previous June record was set last year with 7.34 million guest nights. Compared to 2016, the number of overnight stays has increased by almost 24 percent.
Swedish guest nights increased by 2.1 percent, while foreign guest nights increased by 6.1 percent. Almost 70 percent of overnight stays were made by Swedish travelers.
Among international markets, Germany accounted for the most guest nights with 538,899, despite a slight decline compared to the previous year. Norway showed the strongest development among the largest markets with an increase of 10.7 percent to 433,140 guest nights. The USA also increased by 7.2 percent.
Visit Sweden points to several reasons for this development, including the continued growth of global tourism, the weak Swedish krona, which makes Sweden more affordable for foreign visitors, and a growing interest in nature experiences and outdoor activities.
– It is extremely pleasing that tourism in Sweden continues to grow during the month of June, both in cities and in the countryside with all the fantastic Swedish experiences, says Visit Sweden CEO Susanne Andersson.
Despite record levels, occupancy rates at Swedish commercial accommodation facilities are still relatively low. In June, around 61 percent of beds were occupied, meaning that almost four out of ten beds were empty. According to Visit Sweden, this shows that overtourism is not a general problem in Sweden, although some destinations may experience high pressure during occasional periods.
The final picture of the summer season will only come at the end of September, when the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth publishes the statistics for August – the traditionally most important month for international tourism to Sweden.
