Record number of new Covid cases in Germany

The spread of the virus in Germany is the worst since the pandemic broke out, according to figures from the RKI on Thursday. In the last 24 hours, 33,949 cases have been reported, compared to the previous high of 33,777 cases from December 18, 2020.

The number of cases has been rising steadily for several weeks, which earlier this week led Health Minister Jens Spahn to state that the fourth wave is washing over Germany with ”extraordinary force.”.

Politically, low vaccination coverage has been pointed out as an explanation for the increase. Just under 67 percent of the population is fully vaccinated, compared to 81 percent in Sweden.

”We are currently experiencing a pandemic primarily among the unvaccinated, a massive one,” says Spahn, warning that IVF places in some parts of the country are running out.
