The black boxes found on board the crashed plane in South Korea stopped recording just four minutes before it crashed, South Korea's transport ministry said.

The accident occurred at the airport in Muan, in southern South Korea, on December 29. An investigation conducted by South Korean and American authorities together with aircraft manufacturer Boeing has been ongoing since then.

The cause of the accident has still not been determined, but investigators have pointed to a bird strike and a landing gear failure as possible reasons why the plane had problems landing and crashed into a concrete wall.

Now they are also planning to investigate the reason why the two black boxes stopped recording, according to a statement from the Ministry of Transport.

The crash killed 179 of the 181 people on board.
