The Government has decided to instruct the Swedish Agency for Administrative and Financial Affairs to recover approximately SEK 880 million of the capital contribution of SEK 2,500 million that, based on a previous authorization by the Riksdag, was paid to Swedavia on October 23, 2020.

The owner's capital injection of SEK 2,500 million in October 2020 was made on market terms. Following a complaint, the European Commission has reviewed the capital injection based on the practice created during the COVID-19 pandemic, which means that the government now assesses that SEK 1,621 million will be approved by the European Commission under the State aid rules of the TFEU (the Functioning of the European Union). As a result, the excess amount of approximately SEK 880 million plus interest needs to be repaid by Swedavia, and Kammarkollegiet must return to the Ministry of Enterprise, Innovation and Innovation with a specification of the amount by 31 October 2022.

"The owner's support early in the pandemic, after a drastic decline in passengers and during a period of great uncertainty, was very significant. We are now in a more stable position - although a lot of uncertainty remains, air travel has begun to recover and in the second quarter of the year Swedavia achieved a positive operating result for the first time since the period January-March 2020," says Mats Pahlson, CFO at Swedavia.

Swedavia will now also examine the possible consequences of the government decision for other previously received support as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, such as the restructuring support totaling SEK 441 million. The review of the shareholder contribution and uncertainty regarding the possible impact on other government support have previously been communicated in the risk sections of the interim reports and annual report.

"Swedavia has the capacity to handle the likely repayments both in terms of liquidity and with continued maintenance of the owner's capital structure objectives for the company. Furthermore, existing operations and investment programs will continue according to current planning," says Mats Pahlson.
