The strange phenomenon attracts crowds to Mallorca

Remove

On 12 August next year, many people are planning a visit to the Swedish favourite, Mallorca. The reason? A total solar eclipse that is expected to be spectacular. Searches for accommodation in the country during this period are now increasing – considerably.

The anticipated solar eclipse will be the first of its kind visible from Spain in 100 years. This is reported by Majorca Daily Bulletin.

The solar eclipse will sweep diagonally from Galicia to Mallorca, passing through cities such as León, Bilbao, Valencia, and Palma. And as the phenomenon occurs at sunset, around 8:00 PM, it is expected to coincide with the generally clear August skies – making it all the more spectacular.

Searches for accommodation are soaring

Although the celestial phenomenon will be visible from several places in the world, Mallorca is one of the places where the experience is expected to be most impactful. The popular island lies on the central line – where the eclipse is expected to be total. On the south coast, with towns such as Andratx, Ellencs, Sóller, Deià and Valldemossa, there are said to be great chances of experiencing the unusual eclipse.

And the phenomenon has already attracted considerable attention. According to the Majorca Daily Bulletin, searches on the rental site Airbnb have increased by 830 percent for stays in eclipse zones across Spain.

Booked hotel – for $2 million

Among other things, a group of 150 Italian astronomy enthusiasts has booked into a five-star hotel in Mallorca – at a cost of €2 million.

The government expects Mallorca – which usually has a large influx of tourists – to be extra populated in the days surrounding the solar eclipse. This could lead to logistical challenges, not least for traffic. They are also warning about the risks of looking at the solar eclipse without the correct eye protection.
