The world-famous carnival in Rio de Janeiro is being moved from late February to late April, Brazilian authorities have announced.

The reason is the Covid situation and the spread of the omicron variant. In a statement, the organizers state that they aim to hold the carnival starting on April 21.

Brazil has been hit hard by the pandemic, with more than 622,000 people dying from COVID-19. Last year, the entire carnival was canceled.
