Rio De Janeiro is canceling the street parade at this year's Carnival, due to an increase in covid-19 as a result of the omicron variant, the city's mayor Eduardo Paes announced.
This is the second year the event – with bands marching through the city – has been cancelled. This year it was scheduled to be held between February 25 and March 1.
The street parade is different from the procession of samba schools that takes place in the city's Sambadrome, which is yet to take place as planned with a capacity of 70,000.
