Bookings for COVID-19 vaccinations in Italy skyrocketed this week after the government announced that all employees must be able to show a vaccination certificate, negative test or recent recovery from illness.

”Nationally, there was an increase in bookings for the first dose of between 20 and 40 percent compared to last week,” says Italy's corona commissioner Francesco Figliuolo.

The so-called ”green passport” was introduced in Italy in August but only applied to indoor restaurant visits, museums or sporting events. This week, Prime Minister Mario Draghi announced that it will also apply to all workplaces from October 15. Those who refuse to get vaccinated and do not have an approved health reason will be considered absent without pay.

Almost 76 percent of everyone over the age of 12 is fully vaccinated against Covid-19 in Italy.
