Rush to Gotland – but total travel is decreasing

Typical holiday destinations saw an increase in tourist arrivals last week, data from Telia shows. But overall travel in the country is down.

”"This is when we enter vacation mode," says Kristofer Ågren, head of business area data analysis at Telia.

Travel to, from and within typical holiday destinations has increased over the past week. The number of trips to Gotland increased by 54 percent during week 28 compared to week 27. Data from Telia also shows that travel increased in Kalmar, Blekinge and Halland counties.

”"These are typical holiday destinations, but if you look at what the summer looked like in 2019, it's still calmer," says Kristofer Ågren at Telia.

Total travel in the country decreased by eight percent between week 27 and week 28. This may be due to more people having had time to get to their holiday destinations and having fallen into a holiday slump.

Kristofer Ågren also notes that we will not be able to draw any conclusions about the trends in travel this summer compared to last year until a few weeks later.

”"If you look at the country as a whole, there was a sharp decrease when the restrictions came in and then they kept that level until about week 21-22. Then we went up to a higher level of movement and kept it on average until last week when there was a decline compared to the week before," he explains.
