Sweden's support for SAS during the corona pandemic does not violate EU rules, the EU Court of Justice stated in a ruling on Wednesday.
The aid from April 2020 has already been approved by the European Commission, but was taken to court by Ryanair. The Irish company lost both the SAS aid and France's aid to Air France.
A few hours after the ruling, Ryanair announced that it would appeal the ruling. The company describes the state aid as ”discriminatory state subsidies.”.
The European Court of Justice, however, has a different opinion. ”Support measures adopted to remedy a serious disturbance in the economy of a Member State, such as the current credit guarantee scheme, are presumed to have been adopted in the interest of the Union when they are necessary, appropriate and proportionate,” said Wednesday’s ruling.
