In early November, it will be possible to fly directly between Gothenburg and Kaunas for the first time. Gothenburg Landvetter's fastest growing airline before the pandemic continues to expand and will open a new route to Lithuania's second largest city after the capital Vilnius during the autumn holidays. At the same time, Ryanair is launching new routes to Billund and Riga, a domestic route to the new base at Stockholm Arlanda – and in July it was the premiere to Zagreb.

The flight to Kaunas is currently the only direct connection to Lithuania. In the years before the pandemic, traffic to Lithuania developed very positively through a direct connection between Gothenburg and Vilnius. The majority of passengers were foreign travelers who traveled for work or privately to visit family and friends, as did the majority of Swedish private travelers. Lithuania, like the entire Baltic region, has also become an attractive destination for tourists. Kaunas is centrally located in the country, just under 100 km from Vilnius, and is an important economic, academic and cultural center.

Although travel is still heavily affected by the pandemic, demand for air travel continues to recover. For travel within the EU, the EU's digital Covid certificate creates the conditions for simplified travel as control procedures can be further coordinated.

– It is truly positive news that Ryanair continues to expand at Landvetter and that they choose to launch another new destination so soon after the start of traffic to Zagreb and before the flights to Billund, Riga and Stockholm have started is a statement of strength and a sign of increased demand, says Anna Stromwall, Airport Director at Gothenburg Landvetter Airport. Kaunas is a nice city with an exciting history that I hope many in Western Sweden take the opportunity to discover.
