More and more travelers are seeking out the wintry mountains and vast plains of northern latitudes. To meet the growing demand for Arctic and winter tourism, SAS is launching a direct route between Copenhagen and Kiruna, starting on December 12, 2024.

The new route is a continued part of SAS's strategic focus on strengthening Copenhagen Airport as a global hub, enabling travelers from all over the world to easily reach Kiruna's unique winter experiences. With improved connections, SAS wants to promote tourism and strengthen accessibility to Scandinavia's northernmost regions.

Kiruna, located 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle and known for its scenic surroundings, the Northern Lights, the Icehotel and the opportunities to experience Sami culture, has become an increasingly popular destination among winter travelers looking to explore the Arctic.

”There is a clearly growing demand for tourism in Swedish Lapland from all over the world. Therefore, we have already decided to maintain direct flights between Copenhagen and Kiruna during the winter season 2025/2026. The route will also provide residents of northern Sweden with smooth connections to Europe and even further afield, via Copenhagen Airport and SAS’s extensive global network.””", says Henrik Winell, Vice President Network at SAS.

The new flight route enables SAS to attract tourists not only from Denmark and southern Sweden, but also from all over Europe, similar to Tromsø in Norway.

”"The direct line is an important step in improving accessibility and connections to our region. SAS not only makes it easier for travelers to visit Kiruna, but also supports the local business community and the growing interest in travel to the Arctic."”", says Peter Salomonsson, CEO of Kiruna Lappland.

”"We are pleased that SAS is launching a route from Copenhagen, which will make it even easier for international visitors to experience the beauty of Lapland. Air connections to Kiruna are of great importance to the region and the local community, where tourism plays an important role. In addition, Kiruna residents will have a quick and convenient opportunity to explore the Danish capital,", says Jörgen Bergstrand, acting airport manager at Kiruna Airport, Swedavia.

The Copenhagen-Kiruna route will operate when Kiruna is covered in snow, from December 12, 2024 to April 27, 2025. Flights will operate on Thursdays and Sundays, as well as on Saturdays for six weeks around Christmas and New Year.

At the end of the season, in April, SAS will only operate on Sundays. However, Kiruna is accessible all year round with SAS flights via Stockholm, which offers excellent connections to and from SAS's extensive traffic program in Copenhagen.
