SAS plans to challenge Norwegian on longer routes to destinations including the USA by leasing Airbus A321LR aircraft from Air Lease Corp (ALC).

A spokesperson for the Swedish-Danish-Norwegian company has stated to Bloomberg News the day after the company announced the leasing of three planes from ALC.

In Wednesday's press release, it was highlighted that these plans can reach destinations in Canada, the Middle East, and India from Scandinavia.

The aircraft in question has only a single aisle and is therefore considerably smaller than the aircraft currently used by SAS for longer routes.

Thursday's Bloomberg News telegram states Chicago and Washington DC as potential destinations for SAS when these planes are put into service, which will happen from the first half of 2020.

Norwegian has an order for 30 aircraft of the same type.
