Scotland is closing down for the rest of January due to an increasing number of confirmed cases of corona infection.
The announcement comes from Nicola Sturgeon, regional head of government in the self-governing British region, and the lockdown will take effect from midnight, Tuesday night.
”"We have decided to introduce a legal obligation to stay at home from midnight for the rest of January, except for absolutely necessary reasons. This will be similar to the closure we had in March last year," she told the regional parliament.
The announcement from Scotland increased pressure on British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to further tighten Covid regulations in the rest of the country – not least in light of the fact that the new variant of the coronavirus, which is suspected to be much more contagious, has taken hold in the UK.
And just a short while after Nicola Sturgeon's announcement, Johnson's office announced that news about new, stricter regulations to combat the spread of the coronavirus would come later on Monday evening.
