One of the biggest travel weekends of the year is approaching. Anyone heading out into traffic in the coming days can expect "difficult weather.".
”It can be good to keep track and plan your driving,” says Charlotta Eriksson, meteorologist at SMHI.
This year, Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday. This means that travel to various Christmas celebrations will likely be more concentrated over a few days, according to the Swedish Transport Administration's press officer Bengt Olsson.
”"On Friday, and it might start as early as Thursday evening, there will probably be those who travel a little further by car," he says.
”While those who travel on Saturday travel a little shorter.”
As always, it is important to plan your trip and, for example, check the weather forecast.
”"If you travel far, you will drive on many different road surfaces. You need to have a little idea of what to expect," says Olsson.
On the weather front, there is a lot happening at the end of the week. SMHI has issued several yellow warnings for snowfall in the coming days, including in Dalarna, Västernorrland and western Svealand. In Gävleborg County there is also an orange warning. Especially on Thursday and Friday it can be difficult on the roads, not least in the southern parts.
”"It will also continue to snow on Saturday, especially on the east coast of Sweden. And then a new wave of snow will come in over northern Norrland on Sunday," says Charlotta Eriksson, meteorologist at SMHI.
Keeping your distance and having margins in traffic becomes extra important when there is a risk of snow and ice. But it's not just other cars you need to keep an eye on.
”"Take a look at the side of the road. We have an increasing problem with wildlife, everything from wild boar to deer and moose," says Bengt Olsson.
However, most accidents do not usually occur on the way to the Christmas celebrations. It is rather the journeys home that are more accident-prone, according to the Swedish Transport Administration.
”"What it is that causes this can only be speculated about, but one can suspect that there is a great desire to get home quickly. The return journey is a necessary evil and one wants to shorten it."”
