All propeller-driven aircraft now follow shorter departure routes to their respective destinations.
This reduces the number of kilometers flown and thus the amount of emissions generated by each flight. In addition, air traffic is spread out over more areas, leading to reduced noise along the same route.
“We operate in an industry that is expected to reduce its environmental impact as much as possible. This change is a way for us at LFV to show that we take the issue very seriously,” says Hossein Ghate, Head of Air Traffic Control at Gothenburg Landvetter Airport.
The change is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from air traffic at Landvetter by almost 160 tons per year. This is equivalent to the total CO2 emissions of about 20 people for an entire year. In addition, emissions of water vapor, nitrogen oxides and particles from the aircraft engines will also be reduced.
– Aviation continues to face major challenges in adapting to the current climate crisis. No single actor can do everything, but we can all do something to reduce the industry's environmental impact. Since we are also shortening flight times, for example by a couple of minutes to Stockholm, and also increasing flight safety further by spreading air traffic more widely, this is a logical and important step at Landvetter, says Hossein Ghate.
