| 2023 has proven to be a time of changing travel behaviors. As Swedes begin to travel again after several years of travel restrictions, the average length of a trip has been shortened by two days compared to 2019, according to recent data from travel agency Ticket. The average trip now lasts 9.4 days compared to 11.5 days in 2019. The exception is Gran Canaria, where travelers want to stay as long as before. In 2019, Alicante was the European destination with the longest stay, with an average trip length of 10.7 days. In 2023, the average trip length to Alicante will be 7.8 days. This suggests that Swedes are choosing to shorten their trips and perhaps focus more on quality than quantity when exploring the continent. It is clear that travel is evolving and adapting to a new era. Travelers are looking for different experiences, and these figures reflect an increasing demand for shorter and more concentrated trips. Summer 2023 has been a particularly interesting time to analyze these trends. During the summer season, we saw a dramatic decrease in trip length compared to the same period in 2019, with a decrease of 23 percent from 11.3 days to 8.7 days. While trip lengths decreased, bookings increased by 9.6 percent in summer 2023 compared to 2019. Travel trends have really changed in recent years. The shorter trips this summer may of course be partly due to the rainy weather back home in Sweden causing many to book short, last-minute trips to the sun, but for many customers it may also be a change in preferences. People want to explore the world on their own terms, and shorter trips can offer a more intense and memorable experience, says Vincent Goodbrand.
